| Omar
Farouk Tekbilek |
 |
Night
Time
blends the talents
of Brian Keane, guitarist, composer, and keyboard player,
and a fine Turkish musician, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, who
plays ney and many other instruments.
Under Desert Stars is a
joint collaboration between Omar and the Australian
composer and percussionist Michael Askill. Ya
Bouy is from Tekbilek's new album Alif
(Narada 2002). It is an instrumental arrangement of
a famous song written by Egyptian composer Farid al-Atrash,
here energetically transformed for belly dancers.
During the 60's Omar established himself as one of the
world's foremost performers of Middle Eastern music.
His appearances with jazz musicians Don Cherry and Karl
Berger, and his work on numerous film and TV scores
attest to his leadership status among contemporary Middle
Eastern musicians.

| Naseer
Shamma |
 |
|
Naseer
was born in 1963 in al-Kut, a southern city
in Iraq. He studied at Baghdad's Institute of
Music and, in 1987, received a diploma in musical
art. Later he specialised in the oud. Since
he started his professional career, Naseer has
been composing his own music. He is now one
of the most renowned oud players. His compositions
are culturally unique. He performs on the oud
in a manner which combines ancient methods with
his own modern compositions. He has constructed
an eight-string oud following the manuscript
of the 9th century music theorist al-Farabi.
This new design (8 instead of 6 strings) expanded
the musical range of the oud and gave it a distinct
tonality. |
