Nusrat
Fateh Ali Khan, internationally recognized for his mastery
of a form of Urdu music known as Qawwali, began to embrace
nontraditional elements in his music since 1990, and collaborated
with world famous musicians such as Peter Gabriel, Michael
Brook and Massive Attak. Qawwali is the vocal expression
of Sufism, the mystical sect of Islam that embraces music
as a means of becoming one with the Divine. Khan was first
brought before the public by Peter Gabriel's WOMAD Foundation
( World of Music, Art and Dance ) in 1984. Khan stirred
audience into rapture with the intensity of his singing,
and has gained a large following around the world.
Mustt Mustt (Lost In His
Work) was remixed by Massive Attack, and Intoxicated
by Michael Brook. Sadly, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan passed
away in August of 1997.
