Cheb
Mami was one of the foremost singers of Rai when it came
out into the open in 1985-86. Rai is a music style mixing
modern, western rythmes and technology with a traditional
music line. It grew out of Oran in north-western Algeria,
and has reached all corners of the world. Its
origin lies in older religious tradiotions, connected
to Sufism and female cult around popular religious shrines.
Today the main subject of this popular singing is problems
of the everyday life. Rai has been the object of world
attention more than any other form of Arabic music.
Tracks 1, 2 and 3 are from his album Dellali, a
Mondo

Khaled is undoubtadly the leader of Rai music in the world.
He was born in Oran in 1960 and started music activities
from his early years. In 1990 he moved to France, from
where he launched his international career. He introduced
rai music to the French people and through it, he earned
a worldwide reputation. His music continued to develop,
and elements like jazz and hip hop were added to it. Mani
Hani and Hmama are
from his album Ya-Rayi.
Ayisha and Wahrane
are from his earlier songs and they are among his most
popular ones.Meme Pas Fatigue
is a new song with Magic System.Ya
Hbabi, Tal Dhabi
and Mimoune are from his
latest album Liberte. |

Rachid
Taha is a leading Algerian singer and song writer. Born
in Oran
and raised in France, Rachid first became involved with
music in the mid '80s. In
1995 he established himself
in the international recording world with his first solo
album "Olé Olé".
Three years later he followed it with his 2nd masterpiece
"Diwan". Taha
makes tasty
mixtures
between rock'n'roll, electro and traditional music.

Sahraoui & Chaba Fadela |

| Before
their recent seperation, Fadela
and Sahraoui were a husband and wife duet that were famous
performers of Algerian rai. Fadela Zelmat started her
career at the age of 14 when she starred in the Algerian
film Djalti. She was also a back up vocalist for
Bouteiba Sghir and Cheikha Djenia, two key figures in
rai music. Mohammad Sahraoui
is a classically trained Algerian musician
and arranger. They met in Oran, Algeria, the birthplace
of rai, in the 1970's and decided to form a duo. After
recording N'Sel Fik, a song that became one of
rai's music's anthems, they were signed to Island Records.

Samira Said is an example of a true elite superstar and
is one of the most successful arabic singers. Born and
raised in Rabat, Morocco, Samira began singing at an early
age and is gifted with a sensitive, beautiful voice. Samira
managed to remain one of the top singers in the Arabic
world by totally dedicating herself to her career, and
always looking for new aspects and new subjects that make
her unique in her style. She is also always looking for
a variety of music flavors and styles: Tarab, Rai, Jazz,
Slow, etc.. and produced a variety of top selling albums.

Atlas |

Natacha Atlas was born in Belgium, but is of Middle Eastern
descent, with ancestral and family links to Egypt, Palestine
and Morocco. Having moved around the world for most of
her life, living in Brussels, Egypt, Greece and England,
her experience of different cultures has most certainly
influenced her music.
In the early 90's she began collaboration with Transglobal
Underground, the London-based multicultural collective
who, in blending electronica, dub, hip-hop and funk with
Indian, African and Middle Eastern musical forms, were
significant role models for todays world dance phenomenon.
In addition to many joint works she had with a wide range
of musicians, Natacha has produced 7 albums, all intelligently
and naturally fusing Middle Eastern and European styles.
